Mixed Berry: What is mixed berry supposed to taste like, exactly? Well, this just tastes like corn syrup.Strawberry: This lacks a strong strawberry flavor and tastes artificial and sickly sweet.Blueberry: Tastes like blueberry that has been laced with pesticides! These have a slight chemical taste to them, and there is no sour to offset the sweet.I suspect one of the reds was supposed to be strawberry, but it was impossible to tell. Strawberry: There are supposedly two red flavors in the package, but all the reds look the same. The first hit tastes like cherry-flavored Sucrets (for those of you born after 1970 or so, Sucrets are cough suppressant tablets), and then it tastes kind of like burned rubber (not that I have ever eaten burned rubber, but you know). Lime: This one boasts a strong artificial lime flavor.Orange: The initial flavor is quite strong and somewhat reminiscent of orange, but it quickly morphs into just a sickly sweet candy.Talk about bland city! The flavors aren’t listed on the package, and I certainly couldn’t tell what the flavors were from eating the candies, but there were pictures of some fruits, so these are my best guesses: If these are the original flavors, I can see why I bypassed these during my childhood. We’ll start with the bad then work up to the good, okay?

The five kinds of Mike and Ike candies included Original Fruits, Berry Blast, Tropical Typhoon, Tangy Twister, and Lemonade Blends (which is due to be released nationwide in the summer of 2008). Well, I recently had the honor of reviewing five selections of Mike and Ike candies, and I think I know why. I wasn’t exactly sure why, since I did like candies in the jellybean category. My mother even packed full-size candy bars in my sack lunches! Mysteriously, Mike and Ike candies were absent from my candy-eating repertoire. Ethan remains loyal to Mike and Ike because he likes the more realistic fruit flavor (due to containing fruit juice)and actually likes the chewy texture so much that he doesn’t mind them sticking to his teeth. As a hardcore Candy Addict, I consumed a good deal of candy during my childhood. Compared to Mike and Ikes they are much easier to chew.

I’m not a big chewy-sticky candy person but due to their dissolving factor, I go with Good and Fruity, even with the tart, sour flavor. Maybe they’re not supposed to but they were too sticky for me It was like chewing glue and they did not dissolve well. I thought the flavor was smoother and more pleasant but the texture was too much for me. He thought these have a juicer flavor and likes the density and chewiness.

In fact, he did a blind taste test and could tell just by holding the Good and Fruitys that they were not Mike and Ikes. But after a few of these I did end up thinking they weren’t too badĮthan has a history with these being one of his favorite candies. I thought they had a faint dishwasher soap taste and wasn’t crazy about how they stuck to my teeth. Ethan thought the outer coating was “chalky”, kind of like Sweetarts and thought they had a very fain licorice flavor. The texture was really sugary like a jellybean but dissolved better. Because of this formula change, they are very much like Mike and Ike’s Original Fruit flavor and worth comparing. That does seem to ring a bell from what I remember these being like from my Trick-or-Treating days, which was the only time I’d have these. The resulting candy texture is far closer to a small jelly bean than to the traditional Good & Plenty crisp outside, chewy inside texture.” Sometime around 1992, however, the formula was changed and the candies’ interiors became color & flavor-coordinated with the outer shell to give the candy a “fruitier” taste. I don’t know too much about these candies so I looked in Wikipedia and though this was interesting: “Prior to 1992, all Good & Fruity candies contained the same-flavored red gummy center, relying upon the hard candy shell to provide the different flavor according to color.
